Introduction: On the slopes of Galilee, Jesus sat down to teach His disciples and the crowds. This artwork portrays the core of Christian ethics: The Beatitudes. These are not rigid laws, but a guide to happiness left by Jesus for all His followers. He teaches us that true blessing is found not in worldly wealth, but in being poor in spirit, in mourning, and in being peacemakers.
Scripture: "When he saw the crowds, he went up the mountain, and after he had sat down, his disciples came to him. He began to teach them, saying: 'Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Blessed are they who mourn, for they will be comforted. Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the land...'" (Matthew 5:1-5)
Artistic Appreciation
The Posture of the Teacher: On the right side, Jesus is seated, raising His hand in a gesture of blessing and teaching. This symbolizes the Word of God descending like life-giving rain.
The Multitude Thirsting for the Word: On the left, a dense crowd gazes intently at Jesus. The delicate etching captures humanity’s profound longing for the truths of life.
Imagery of the Mountain: Jesus is positioned at the top of the composition. This represents not just geographical height, but the sacredness of truth, elevating the listeners from worldly worries to spiritual heights.
Spiritual Reflection: St. Thérèse once said, "Our Lord does not so much look at the greatness of our actions, or even at their difficulty, as at the love with which we do them." The "Beatitudes" Jesus spoke of were shocking then and remain so today. He shows us that even in moments of humility, suffering, or being misunderstood, we are blessed if we have God in our hearts. St. Thérèse practiced this spirit of being "poor in spirit" throughout her life, seeing God’s greatness in small things. May this window remind us not to be bound by worldly standards of success, but to seek the true happiness that leads us to the Kingdom of Heaven.
