Theme: Triumphant Entry into Jerusalem — The Triumph of the Humble King
Introduction: Amidst jubilant cheers, Jesus entered Jerusalem riding on a young donkey. This window captures one of the most moving scenes in the Gospels: the crowds spreading their cloaks and waving palm branches to welcome the Prince of Peace. Beneath this triumphant appearance, Jesus moved forward in great humility, steadfastly heading toward His path of sacrificial love and redemption.
Scripture: "They brought the colt to Jesus and put their cloaks over it. And he sat on it. Many people spread their cloaks on the road, and others spread leafy branches that they had cut from the fields. Those preceding him as well as those following kept exclaiming: 'Hosanna! Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord!'" (Mark 11:7-9)
Artistic Appreciation
The Humble King: At the center is Jesus riding a colt, His demeanor calm and dignified. Choosing a donkey instead of a warhorse symbolizes that He is not a secular ruler of military force, but a divine King bringing peace and love.
The Cheering Crowd: Jesus is surrounded by people waving palm (or leafy) branches, including women and children. Their passionate gestures reflect their longing and joy for the arrival of the Messiah.
Symbolism of Palms: The intertwined palm leaves visible in the composition symbolize victory and peace in church art, foreshadowing the glory Jesus would win through His Passion.
Spiritual Reflection: St. Thérèse once said, "My way is the way of confidence and love." She sought to remain faithful in small things, much like the little donkey that carried Jesus—ordinary, yet carrying the Savior.
